Man United, Arsenal and other stars who need January moves to boost England chances

first_img 1. Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal) – click the yellow arrow above, right, to see other England players who may need to move to make the Euro 2016 squad – Which England players need to move in order to enhance their chances of making manager Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad? Left-back is a slot where there is relative depth and, unfortunately for Kieran Gibbs, Nacho Monreal is also in excellent form for Arsenal. It’s a combination that leaves his hopes of making Hodgson’s 23-man squad dwindling with just over four months until the manager makes his big anouncement. If Luke Shaw is fit, Gibbs is arguably fourth choice behind the Manchester United man, Leighton Baines and Danny Rose, with Aaron Cresswell also playing regularly for West Ham. A January move could change that. 5 The January transfer window provides an opportunity for some players to revive their careers, but this season is particularly special. With the season culminating with the international feast that is Euro 2016, those on the periphery of the England squad may start weighing up their options in a bid to impress national manager Roy Hodgson. It’s unclear if Hodgson already has a rough idea of who he will be taking to France, but he would be naïve not to stay open minded with so much still to play for between now and the end of the season. So, after Jonjo Shelvey and Charlie Austin completed moves in recent days, who needs to follow suit in the next two weeks to enhance their chances of booking their seat on the Eurostar?talkSPORT has shortlisted five who should consider transfers – click the yellow arrow above, right, to see who made it… 5. Ashley Young (Manchester United) – In contrast with Shawcross, Young plays regularly – albeit out of position – for an established and elite Premier League side yet hasn’t featured for England since 2013. He’s one of Louis van Gaal’s most consistent performers and a direct and effective winger, but Hodgson appears to regard his international career as finished. Could a change of scenery show ambition and alter the England manager’s perspective? 5 5 5 4. Ryan Shawcross (Stoke) – Perennially overlooked, but will Shawcross’s recent record and impact at Stoke finally get him the recognition he deserves? Since he returned from injury in November, the Potters have kept seven clean sheets in 12 Premier League games to help propel them among the Premier League top four contenders. His no-nonsense style and leadership qualities would be a huge asset for England, but does he need to move to a ‘bigger’ and perhaps ‘more desirable’ club than Stoke to clinch his place? 3. Andros Towsnend (Tottenham) – Similarly to Berahino, Townsend’s pseudo-exile after an alleged bust up with a member of the Tottenham coaching staff has seen his chances of making Hodgson’s squad fade drastically. Townsend, however, seems to save his best performances for the international stage and scored in both World Cup and European Championship qualifying campaigns. Hodgson likes him, so a loan move could certainly elevate him back into recognition. 2. Saido Berahino (West Brom) – Berahino has earned just a solitary England call up in his career so far, which came in 2014 but didn’t feature against either Slovenia or Scotland on that occasion. West Brom manager Tony Pulis hasn’t been impressed by his attitude after his move to Tottenham fell through in the summer and has duly restricted his game time. A host of clubs, including Newcastle, Chelsea and Spurs, are considering an approach before the end of the window, and it could provide the platform for him to propel himself into international reckoning again. 5last_img read more

Manchester City to rival Bayern Munich for Juventus star

first_img Pep Guardiola reportedly tried to land Bonucci last summer 1 Manchester City and Bayern Munich are preparing to enter a bidding war for Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci. The Italian international has played a key part in Juventus’ staggering 17-match unbeaten run in Serie A and his performances have caught the attention of some of Europe’s big hitters.According to Tuttosport, Pep Guardiola tried to land Bonucci last summer and now wants to make him one of his first signings when he takes over at City. One of Guardiola’s first assignments at the Etihad will be to overhaul their unreliable back four and the Spanish manager sees Bonucci as the ideal central defensive partner to Vincent Kompany. But the report also claims Bayern retain a strong interest in the defender and will battle with City to buy the 28-year-old.last_img read more
