first_imgReemah Check your words. This is the admonition coming from rising Reggae songstress, Reemah, to some entertainers who have no qualms about delving into debauchery and borderline pornography to claim fame and sell records. This talented native of the island of St Croix has emerged on the entertainment scene with a refreshing stream of uplifting lyrics that augers well for the future of Reggae music, arguably the Caribbean’s most popular art form. Her performances to date have earned uplifting reviews and Reemah has been described as a captivating artist with a striking command and stage presence. Her lyrical prowess and unique vocal ability is like a breath of fresh air. This is all evident in the content of her debut album Check Your Words which was released for public consumption in July 2012 and has been blazing a conscious trail ever since. The 13 track album, is for the most part produced by Catalyst Mitchell, and also features productions by Jalani Horton of Bambu Station and Laurent “Tippy” Alfred. In March 2016 Check Your Words was re-released by VPAL, with the addition of a new acoustic track titled ‘One Day’.Reemah’s has thrilled audiences in Washington DC, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, California, and at venues in South America. All that work was preparation for her latest release Crowns Up On Your Head which serves as the title track for her upcoming sophomore album.last_img read more

UN Secretary-General wants Help for Caribbean in Dealing with COVID-19

first_imgUnited Nations Secretary-General António Guterres The UN Secretary-General maintained that the root causes of inequality, political instability and displacement must be addressed, while underscoring that at a time when too many citizens feel excluded, “greater accountability and transparency are crucial”. In releasing a new policy initiative on how best to recover in a region already embroiled in poverty, hunger, unemployment and inequality, Guterres said that several countries in the region are now among those with the highest per capita infection rates worldwide. The UN said regional unemployment will surge from 8.1 per cent in 2019 to 13.5 per cent this year – yielding over 44 million people out of work, an increase of more than 18 million from last year. “Building back better demands strengthening democratic governance, human rights protection and the rule of law, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” The UN said it is projected that there will be a 9.1 per cent contraction in gross domestic product (GDP) in the region, “which will be the largest in a century.” Guterres expressed full solidarity with the people of Latin America and the Caribbean as they face these challenges, saying that “solidarity and compassion should be their guide”. Guterres also flagged the urgent need for greater international support. While stressing the need to “do everything possible to limit the spread of the virus and tackle the health effects of the pandemic”, Guterres Thursday noted that “we must also address the unprecedented social and economic impacts”. “The most vulnerable populations and individuals are once again being hit the hardest,” said Guterres in a video message on the pandemic’s effect throughout a zone grappling with fragmented health services even before COVID-19. The UN said the policy brief underlines an array of urgent and longer-term steps for better recovery, including the prioritization of distance learning and continued child-centered services to mitigate education interruptions. UNITED NATIONS – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the global community to help address the “unprecedented” impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on Latin America and the Caribbean, saying that the region has become a “hotspot of the pandemic.” “I have called for a rescue and recovery package equivalent to more than 10 per cent of the global economy”, he said, underscoring the need of the international community to provide liquidity, financial assistance and debt relief for Latin America and the Caribbean. “Latin American and Caribbean countries, and in particular small island developing states, should not be excluded from global assistance. The international multilateral response needs to be extended to middle-income countries”. He highlighted the plight of older persons and individuals with disabilities, who are at greater risk; and indigenous peoples, those of African descent, migrants and refugees, who suffering disproportionately. It said governments within the region are also being asked to do more to reduce poverty, food insecurity and malnutrition, such as by providing basic emergency income and anti-hunger grants. Moreover, Guterres said regional economic integration is required, with “women participating fully and safely in public and economic life.” “Together, we can overcome this crisis and build inclusive and sustainable societies for all”,he added. The UN chief emphasized the impact of the coronavirus on women across the region, who make up the majority of the workforce and now bear the brunt of additional caregiving. In addition, Guterres said broader structural challenges must be addressed to build back better and transform the region’s development model. Additionally, the UN said poverty is expected to jump by seven per cent to 37.2 per cent in 2020, leaving 230 million poverty-stricken people. The initiative also shines a light on how the crisis is impacting vulnerable groups, including indigenous communities and women. It said extreme poverty is forecast to rise by 4.5 per cent to 15.5 per cent, representing 28 million people more people in dire straits (96 million in total). Against the backdrop of pervasive inequality in the region, he said accessible and comprehensive welfare systems must be developed, fair taxation systems created, decent jobs promoted, environmental sustainability strengthened, and social protection mechanisms reinforced. February Pains… European giants prepare for Australia rethink

The sector’s current agenda and context is dominated by the pending UK government’s judgement on industry FOBTs wagering and advertising standards.Nevertheless, it would be wise for all betting stakeholders to broaden their anxieties, as Australia moves to implement its ‘credit betting ban’ this 17 February, serving industry leadership a further headache.Once deemed a golden frontier for betting operators, seeking to expand internationally within a sports-mad, English speaking nation, Australia has become a brutal terrain for its European settlers.Reforming the ‘2001 Interactive Gambling Act’, the Australian Parliament has moved to implement the federal prohibition of ‘credit card wagering’ on digital gambling platforms.Further market pains were dealt in 2017 as the Turnbull government moved to severely restricted bookmaker advertising, sanctioning a ‘siren to siren’ (start to finish) ban on all forms of gambling marketing during sports broadcasts through any public medium. Finally, serving further market spasms for the industry’s leadership, a number of Australian states now seek to implement individual tax charges on operator betting services.Under this extreme terrain, for European leaders, the tune of the Australian market has morphed from ‘Kylie’s Locomotion’ into a depressive ballad composed by Nick Cave.First, to act on its ‘Australia dilemma’, this January, William Hill announced that it had implemented a strategic review of its William Hill Australia division.Active in the market since 2012, William Hill is reported to have invested AUS $700 million (£450 million) on its Australian expansion, acquiring the online assets of Sportingbet.com.au. Centrebet and TomWaterhouse.comTough market trading in 2017  saw the FTSE bookmaker reveal that wagering had drastically declined for William Hill Australia. This weekend, news sources reported that the bookmaker was reviewing the sale of the division for a rumoured target price of AUS $100 million.William Hill’s Australia quandary will be likely replicated by all European giants active within the market; Ladbrokes Coral, bet365, Paddy Power Betfair and Kindred Group.Seeking to gain market traction, European operators have spent millions £/€ and ample corporate resources developing their Australian market propositions, be it through M&A, full-scale advertising campaigns or developing tailored betting platforms for Australian consumers.Another complex leadership dynamic, sees European giants forced to review Australian assets and strategy, as their shareholders place a deep emphasis on international expansion away from home market comforts. As February approaches, Australia will now be a further ‘big call’ for betting leaders during 2018. Once golden, Australian betting became a crowded house stifled by regulatory demands… Put simply can and should European operators keep their AUS dream alive? read more
