Nick Clegg: No merger with Tories

He will deny rumours of a full electoral pact or even merger between the two parties.Speaking at his party’s annual conference in Liverpool yesterday, Clegg also backed calls for a review of the coalition’s immigration cap after concerns from the City that it is harming the economy. He said he agreed with Vince Cable’s dissent on the policy. The government will launch a crackdown on offshore and online tax dodgers and smugglers in a bid to save £7bn a year by 2015, it was also announced. Ministers are to earmark £900m to fund a new team of investigators to probe offshore tax evasion. They will also use the cash to create cyber tax crime teams and to better detect alcohol and tobacco smuggling.Tax evasion costs the UK about £7bn a year, avoidance costs a similar amount and attacks on the tax system by organised criminals cost about £5bn. The measures are expected to form part of HM Revenue & Customs’ settlement in the government’s spending review, which it will announce on 20 October.Liberal Democrat chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said: “Tax avoidance and evasion are unacceptable at the best of times but in today’s circumstances, it is morally indefensible.” Share More From Our Partners Russell Wilson, AOC among many voicing support for Naomi Osakacbsnews.comPolice Capture Elusive Tiger Poacher After 20 Years of Pursuing the Huntergoodnewsnetwork.orgKiller drone ‘hunted down a human target’ without being told tonypost.comA ProPublica investigation has caused outrage in the U.S. this weekvaluewalk.comNative American Tribe Gets Back Sacred Island Taken 160 Years Agogoodnewsnetwork.orgFlorida woman allegedly crashes children’s birthday party, rapes teennypost.comBrave 7-Year-old Boy Swims an Hour to Rescue His Dad and Little Sistergoodnewsnetwork.orgMark Eaton, former NBA All-Star, dead at 64nypost.comAstounding Fossil Discovery in California After Man Looks Closelygoodnewsnetwork.orgcenter_img Tags: NULL by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMisterStoryWoman Files For Divorce After Seeing This Photo – Can You See Why?MisterStoryTotal PastThe Ingenious Reason There Are No Mosquitoes At Disney WorldTotal PastNoteabley25 Funny Notes Written By StrangersNoteableyMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailPeople TodayNewborn’s Strange Behavior Troubles Mom, 40 Years Later She Finds The Reason Behind ItPeople TodaySerendipity TimesInside Coco Chanel’s Eerily Abandoned Mansion Frozen In TimeSerendipity TimesBrake For ItThe Most Worthless Cars Ever MadeBrake For ItBetterBe20 Stunning Female AthletesBetterBemoneycougar.comThis Proves The Osmonds Weren’t So Innocentmoneycougar.com Show Comments ▼ whatsapplast_img read more

Government cuts non-EU skilled work permits

Government cuts non-EU skilled work permits Tuesday 23 November 2010 11:42 am John Dunne THE government will cap the number of skilled migrant workers it allows from outside the European Union at 21,700 a year, a cut of more than a fifth from 2009 levels.Home Secretary Theresa May told parliament today that employees sent to work in Britain by companies from another country would not be subject to a cap if they earned more than £40,000 a year.“We must tighten up our immigration system,” she said. “It is possible to reduce numbers while promoting growth and underlining the message that Britain is open for business.”The government will cut the number of highly-skilled workers who enter the country without a job offer by 13,000 from last year’s level to 1,000.Permits will be limited to “exceptional talent” such as scientists, academics and artists. The number of workers with job offers will be increased by nearly 7,000 to 20,700, although tighter rules will be applied, restricting permits to graduate-level jobs, May said. There will be no limit on investors and entrepreneurs.May also said the coalition government, which plans to bring net migration down to the tens of thousands from nearly 200,000 by 2015, would stop temporary workers coming to Britain and settling permanently.“We will end the link between temporary and permanent migration,” she said. The CBI, the UK industry lobby group, said the government has “listened to the needs of business.”John Cridland, CBI director-general designate, said: “This is a good result for the economy and for the country as a whole, and sends out the message that Britain really is open for business.center_img Share More From Our Partners Biden received funds from top Russia lobbyist before Nord Stream 2 giveawaynypost.comNative American Tribe Gets Back Sacred Island Taken 160 Years Agogoodnewsnetwork.orgRussell Wilson, AOC among many voicing support for Naomi Osakacbsnews.comAstounding Fossil Discovery in California After Man Looks Closelygoodnewsnetwork.orgFlorida woman allegedly crashes children’s birthday party, rapes teennypost.comPolice Capture Elusive Tiger Poacher After 20 Years of Pursuing the Huntergoodnewsnetwork.orgSupermodel Anne Vyalitsyna claims income drop, pushes for child supportnypost.comBrave 7-Year-old Boy Swims an Hour to Rescue His Dad and Little Sistergoodnewsnetwork.orgA ProPublica investigation has caused outrage in the U.S. this weekvaluewalk.com by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMisterStoryWoman Files For Divorce After Seeing This Photo – Can You See Why?MisterStoryTotal PastThe Ingenious Reason There Are No Mosquitoes At Disney WorldTotal PastSerendipity TimesInside Coco Chanel’s Eerily Abandoned Mansion Frozen In TimeSerendipity TimesZen HeraldNASA’s Voyager 2 Has Entered Deep Space – And It Brought Scientists To Their KneesZen Heraldmoneycougar.comThis Proves The Osmonds Weren’t So Innocentmoneycougar.comAlphaCute30 Rules That All “Hells Angels” Have To FollowAlphaCuteTaonga: The Island FarmThe Most Relaxing Farm Game of 2021. The broad M2 measure of money supply grew 19.7 per cent, also topping the official target of 17 per cent.“Lending is still excessive and China’s process of monetary normalisation has not finished yet,” said Wu Tujin, economist with Guosen Securities in Shenzhen. “That means China will still face high pressure from inflation and asset bubbles.”More than just an economic issue, high-speed money and credit growth has become a political concern, helping propel Chinese consumer inflation to its fastest in more than two years.Determined to rein in rising prices, a source of public discontent, the government declared late last year that it would shift to a tighter monetary policy stance. Eurocrats back new tax on City

Eurocrats back new tax on City THE European Parliament voted yesterday to slap a Tobin tax on all financial transactions that pass through Europe, in a bid to raise €200bn (£172bn) for EU?spending. The tax would disproportionately hit the City, Europe’s financial capital, at a time when banks are struggling to build up their capital bases. The EU?Parliament said the proposal, to impose a 0.05 per cent tax on “every type of transaction” at EU-level, is aimed to “help finance budgets, reduce public deficits and fight speculation”.The EU is keen to find new ways to raise cash for itself and sees the region’s banks as a ripe target for extra revenue-raising, claiming the tax would make the industry pay for the crisis. The vote would require the consent of member states to become law, but the margin by which it passed – 529 to 127 – will force the European Commission to draw up plans for its implementation.“We want to send out an institutional signal saying that the private sector bears its part of the responsibility for the crisis,” said German MEP Martin Schulz.Critics fear the charge, dubbed a “Robin Hood tax” by supporters, will drive capital flows outside the EU.The CBI’s Brussels director, Sean McGuire, said: “It would hamper the EU’s long-term competitiveness as a leading centre for financial services companies, and ultimately have a negative impact on jobs and growth.” He added that the tax would also be passed on to consumers. The British Bankers’ Association said: “It would require simultaneous worldwide application to succeed, otherwise the business would simply migrate elsewhere, along with the jobs, the tax revenues and the rest.”The transaction tax vote comes a day after the EU Parliament’s Economic Affairs Committee passed a motion to ban trading of naked credit default swaps (CDS) on sovereign debt and to force traders to settle naked short sales at the end of each day.The measures, which must be negotiated by European finance ministers, would mean that traders could not buy CDSs to insure sovereign debt that they did not own.“They’re trying to say hedging is OK but speculating isn’t,” said an industry source. “But if they ban naked trading, there’ll no one for the worthy hedgers to trade with. They’ll dry up the market.”A naked trade is a bet on a derivative where the trader does not own the underlying asset. whatsapp KCS-content Tuesday 8 March 2011 9:22 pm Share Show Comments ▼ whatsapp Tags: NULL read more

Deutsche to advise UKFI

first_img Thursday 10 March 2011 7:48 pm whatsapp Tags: NULL DEUTSCHE Bank has won the government’s biggest advisory mandate since it bailed out failing banks during the financial crisis, with UK Financial Investments (UKFI) bringing the bank on board to secure the privatisation of Northern Rock.UKFI, which manages the government’s stake in nationalised banks, chose Deutsche ahead of Morgan Stanley, which had been considered the front-runner for the deal but is thought to have been ruled out due to conflicts. The government insists that it has not yet decided whether it will float the bank or sell it off to private bidders: “There is no presumption at this stage that any particular option will be pursued and no timeframe has yet been set for the return of the company to private ownership,” UKFI?said. However, the appointment of an adviser makes it likely that the government will start looking for buyers in the coming months. The bank, which comes with branches and IT systems, is estimated to be worth £1.4bn despite recording a £232m loss for last year. Its ready-to-use branches will make it an appealing prospect for a range of banks trying to break into the high street market. Virgin Money, Tesco Bank and National Australia Bank are all thought to be eyeing the sale with interest, as well as JC Flowers, the private equity firm.Santander UK?is unlikely to be a bidder after snapping up 318 RBS branches sold off last year. It is still in the process of integrating a string of purchases over recent years.?The retail banking market will also see Lloyds sell off 600 branches this year under EU mandate due to its taxpayer bailout. whatsapp Share Read This NextRicky Schroder Calls Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl ‘Ignorant Punk’ forThe WrapCNN’s Brian Stelter Draws Criticism for Asking Jen Psaki: ‘What Does theThe WrapDid Donald Trump Wear His Pants Backwards?
