There are a lot of venues that are not commercially viable and rely on volunteers to operate”, Mr Lynch told the meeting.Mechanisms need to be put in place to facilitate those who cannot afford to use private facilities and negotiations should be held with the owners of those facilities.Looking at what facilities will be needed in the future, the researchers found that there was a need to locate a medium-sized stadium in Limerick. An equine centre and a sulky racing track are also items on the local authorities wish-list, Mr Lynch said.Committee Chairman Cllr Diarmuid Scully (FG) said that an equestrian centre “would have to be open to people who have a tradition of horses.“We see horses being kept on our estates and on halting sites. In a proper environment, people can experience horses in a way that isn’t against the law”, he added.Mr Lynch said the researchers found that walking and hiking were the two most popular forms of exercise with cycling also featuring high on the list of preferred activities.“Considering the asset that is the river, we should encourage and support water-based sports such as kayaking and canoeing. There is also a need for more children’s playgrounds and outdoor adult gyms and the needs of all age groups and of people with disability need to be taken into account,” he added.Mayor Gerry McLoughlin (Lab) said that it would be ” a huge advantage if there were a cycling route linking Limerick and Ennis”.All the proposals are available on the local authority website and are open for public comment. Linkedin A SULKY racing track, more adult outdoor gyms and an equestrian centre are all proposals being considered as part of a joint sports strategy between Clare and Limerick local authorities. And while equine activities feature prominently on the councils’ wish list, the initial study says the last thing the two counties need are more golf clubs. Planning expert, Ciaran Lynch, this week gave a presentation to the Limerick city council’s committee on future planning based on the outcome of a study into the sporting and recreational needs of the Limerick/Clare area.Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up Facebook Advertisement WhatsApp Print Previous articleGreat Limerick Run goes greenNext articleHumer named as head of elite swimming admin

Trail Blazers, Grizzlies advance to NBA play-in game; Suns, Spurs see playoff dreams dashed Trail Blazers beat Grizzlies in play-in, earn first-round series with the Lakers Lakers practice early hoping to answer all questions The Lakers are starting to feel like the Lakers again. As NBA’s marketplace opens Sunday afternoon, the biggest deal of the offseason so far already belongs to the Lakers in a blockbuster trade for Anthony Davis. They also are in the running for the only move that might top it: signing Kawhi Leonard, the freshly minted NBA Finals MVP.The heavy swings for power players are reminiscent of the previous eras of Lakers dominance, when the franchise could get who they wanted and then could add banners to their collection. Among fans, it helps inspire confidence that a six-year playoff drought is soon coming to an end.But the Lakers are also treading on precarious ground, needing to fill at least 11 roster spots for next season. While they’ll meet with Leonard in the next few days — attempting to sell the Riverside native on joining Davis and LeBron James in one of the most intimidating superteams ever — the market is already thinning beneath them. If they miss out, their options to build a promising foundation into an actual contender could be frustratingly dry. But the Lakers’ quickly ramping into a competitor for his services also brings questions. Is Leonard truly interested in teaming up with other stars after he just won a championship as the focal point of his team? Has he built any kind of emotional bond with Toronto and Canada, which fully embraced him with an unparalleled national fervor? Is there any leverage to be gained for Leonard by entertaining more suitors? The Lakers will have to gauge the answers to these questions to determine how plausible signing Leonard truly is.Beyond Leonard or Butler, there does appear to be a fallback plan for the Lakers, albeit a surprising one. If Irving signs with Brooklyn, the Nets are likely to renounce 23-year-old guard D’Angelo Russell. ESPN reported that Russell and the Lakers have an interest in a possible reunion, even though he was shipped out in a trade two years ago. The most the Lakers could pay Russell is about $27.3 million — leaving some money left over to address other areas of the roster.Beyond that, star-chasing becomes less of an option. The Lakers would need to make sensible, middle-of-the-road signings with their available space and target players they believe can help bring a championship to Los Angeles, and they’d have to nail most of them. For the next few years, free agency is going to be the main route for the Lakers to add talent: They gave virtually all of their draft and trade assets to New Orleans and Washington in exchange for Davis. A few bad acquisitions this summer can dramatically hamper the team’s ability to contend, and the Lakers mostly lack the trade ballast to get off of any bad contracts they might take on.With Davis, the Lakers have made a big move to be taken seriously once again. Now comes the tricky part. ESPN reported Saturday afternoon that Kemba Walker is planning on signing with the Boston Celtics, and Kyrie Irving could quickly come to an agreement with the Brooklyn Nets. That takes the two most vaunted guards off the board before free agency even begins on Sunday at 3 p.m. PDT (grumbling about tampering is understandable, but doesn’t change the state of affairs). So the Lakers could be threading a host of needles, weighing the feasibility of landing their top target against missing out on the cream of the free agent role players who could still help. If Leonard takes a few days to parse through his top options — which are believed to be the Raptors, the Clippers and the Lakers — that could eat up valuable time.Related Articles Lakers, Clippers schedules set for first round of NBA playoffs Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error It makes a huge difference. If the Lakers convince Leonard, who was known last year to desire a trade to Southern California, to sign, it would use up the entirety of their estimated $32 million in salary cap space. The rest of the roster would have to be filled out with a $4.8 million room exception and minimum contracts plucking from the bottom of the market. If the Lakers don’t sign a max free agent (the Athletic reported Saturday that they’re also interested in Philadelphia’s Jimmy Butler), they have money to spend on the supporting cast, but that money might not help much if players such as Patrick Beverley and Danny Green (two reported targets) commit to other teams early.Leonard is the kind of free agent worth waiting for. The 6-foot-7 wing is arguably the best two-way player in the NBA, both an elite scorer (26.6 ppg) and a lockdown wing defender. He has credible ties to SoCal, just turned 28 on Saturday, and his playoff run inspired confidence that he can effectively manage a quad condition that hampered him in previous seasons.
