Cardinals win easily in opener

first_imgWHITTIER – Lauren Barron and Mary Ann Campos accounted for 11 of Whittier High School’s goals and the Cardinals swept by visiting South Pasadena, 15-3, in a CIF- Southern Section, Division III first-round girls water polo game Thursday. It took awhile for the Cardinals to pick up speed, but South Pasadena’s valiant effort to pull off a major upset fell considerably short. By the end of the first quarter, it was obvious Whittier’s No. 1-seeded team had too much experience and too much talent. “It was still 1-0 after four minutes, but I think we came out a little bit intimidated and it showed the last part of the quarter when they scored four quick goals,” South Pasadena coach Stuart Blumkin said. Whittier coach Chris Schneider gave the Tigers credit for his team’s slow start. “I thought it was pretty competitive for the first half or so,” Schneider said after his team improved to 21-6 and moved into a second-round game against the winner of Thursday’s Upland-Walnut game. “We made some mistakes in our shooting, hitting the bar or post our fair share, but I thought their goalkeeper (Jennifer Bartlett) played well.” Whittier out-shot the Tigers, 36-26, and Bartlett made several impressive saves. She finished with 10. “She played a great game,” Barron said of Bartlett’s performance. “I think we all were really excited about winning this first-round game, and we came out tight. That was good, though, and now we have that out of our system.” center_img Barron and Campos each scored two goals in the opening quarter en route to a 5-0 lead that became 8-1 at halftime as the Cardinals took advantage of some sloppy Tigers passing with timely steals that were turned into counter-attack goals. Whittier goalkeeper Brooke Sovick recorded 11 saves, including six in the third quarter when South Pasadena (16-9) picked up the attack. South Pasadena’s goals were scored by Carrie Boyle, Jennifer de la Torre and Emma Huang.
