USS Gerald R. Ford completes propulsion plant repairs

first_img Share this article The US Navy has announced that repairs to the USS Gerald R. Ford’s propulsion plant have been completed at Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding. As revealed by the navy, the aircraft carrier’s propulsion plant was re-delivered after more than 12 months of maintenance and repairs as part of the ship’s post-shakedown availability (PSA).Troubles with Ford’s propulsion system were first noted while conducting trials at sea in January 2018, when the crew identified a component in the propulsion train that was operating outside of design specifications.HII-NNS determined that the issue was due to a manufacturing defect (not improper operation) in the propulsion train component that affected the same component in the other propulsion trains. In May 2018, three days into a planned underway to continue testing and evaluation, the ship experienced another propulsion plant issue associated with a design modification which resulted in Ford returning to homeport. Once in Norfolk, adjustments were made and the ship returned to sea later that month.Ford returned to port June 7, 2018, following the completion of all required ship testing during its at sea period. During these tests, the navy and Newport News Shipbuilding determined the required steps to correct the manufacturing defects would be fully corrected during Ford’s PSA.Ford’s propulsion issues weren’t with the nuclear reactors themselves, the navy said. The issues resided in the mechanical components associated in turning steam created by the nuclear plant into spinning screws that propel the ship through the water.Since first getting underway on April 8, 2017, Ford has conducted 10 underway evolutions and has completed all of the testing that was required prior to beginning the ship’s PSA last summer. The navy said the lessons learned, corrections, and design changes would be integrated in the construction of the next ships in the Ford-class of aircraft carriers. Watch Young Derek Trucks Jam With Brother Duane And Jimmy Herring In 1995

first_imgIn 1995, Derek Trucks was in the midst of making his fame through his own Derek Trucks Band. Beyond coming from a family of rock stars, the young Derek had skills that impressed many at that age. While his talents were undeniable, it was Col. Bruce Hampton (who you’ll see on set toward the end of this video) that really pushed along his career. With the “Godfather of Jam Bands” backing you up, there’s no question that the 16-year-old guitarist had business performing at The Georgia Theatre.Jimmy Herring, another close family friend of the Trucks, also played the show with Derek. In the video below, you can see Derek and Herring practicing during soundcheck, alongside a young Duane Trucks behind the drum kit. Who would’ve expected that 21 years later, these two would be playing together in Widespread Panic? Even more, the young drummer is also now married to Herring’s daughter, making The White Wizard out to be Duane’s father-in-law. The history goes way back between the Trucks and Herring families, but this snippet from a soundcheck in 1995 at The Georgia Theatre really shows just how deep the roots run:Watch the full performance of the Derek Trucks Band with Jimmy Herring at The Georgia Theatre in 1995 below:last_img read more

Colombia Will Share Efforts with Neighbors, Defense Minister Says in U.S.

first_img Colombia is ready to share efforts and personnel with neighboring countries in the fight against organized crime, Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera declared on 3 February, following a meeting with his U.S. counterpart, Robert Gates. “Despite the successes we’ve had, we can’t feel at ease; we feel that we also have a great deal to contribute. Just as in our most difficult moments we received cooperation, we’re now not only offering, but putting forward specific cooperation,” Rivera declared at a press conference. “It’s our obligation to talk about these issues. The United States is making a great effort; so are we,” he added. A total of fourteen Latin American countries, including Mexico and Central American nations, are being advised by Colombian military or police forces on security matters, the minister recalled. “We’ve been responding to requests from those countries, on a case-by-case basis, but now we want to do so with a plan that corresponds to a strategic logic, with a portfolio of capabilities, of services, that we can make available to other countries,” he said. Rivera’s visit to Washington, his first since becoming defense minister, is taking place as the U.S. Congress and the White House are launching a fierce debate about the 2011 budget. Colombia is the region’s largest recipient of U.S. security assistance, with more than six billion dollars received since Plan Colombia was activated in 2000. The Central American countries, however, suffering under an unprecedented wave of violence, are also demanding more aid from the United States for a regional plan. Mexico, for its part, signed the Mérida Initiative four years ago, for which Washington has budgeted around 1.3 billion dollars. Rivera characterized his meeting with Gates as “very warm,” although he nonetheless conveyed to Gates his “concern” about a possible cut in funds for Colombia. “I believe that it’s a shared aspiration that all this cooperation can be maintained with a more creative, more prolific dialogue, not only in our country but throughout the region,” he explained.
