LMWP Brings Safe Drinking Water to Sanniquellie

first_imgResidents of Sanniquellie City in Nimba County are now receiving ‘free and safe drinking water’ from the Liberia Municipal Water Project (LMWP) with support from the Government of the United States, in a project known as ‘Quick Impact Water.’ Although it is yet to be completed, the LMWP has decided to reach several communities of people experiencing difficulties getting safe drinking water during the current dry season.Community Relations Officer Mark G. Tomah told this newspaper that the Quick Impact Water Project is being installed in two communities in Sanniquellie, where people pay L$5 per five-gallon container of water.“There is also the Quick Impact Water project called ‘mini water’ that is installed in two locations in Sanniquellie to afford the citizens access to safe drinking water before the main project is completed,” he said. The project is undertaken by the United Infrastructure Project, which is also implementing the LMWP in three counties, including Sanniquellie, Voimjama and Robertsport, with funding from USAID.The LMWP was officially launched on May 27, 2016 by the Liberia Water & Sewer Corporation in collaboration with the USAID.The project was launched under the program called “Capital Improvement Water Project” for Robertsport, Sanniquellie and Voinjama. In his ‘ground broking’ statement, the Mission Director of USAID, Dr. Anthony S. Chan, said the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit adapted 17 sustainability goals to be achieved by 2030 and among the goals was access to clean water and adequate sanitation for all.He said over one million people living in Liberia get their water from unsafe sources like open streams and, unprotected wells, which pose serious threats to Liberia’s development.Recently, when the Daily Observer visited the project site since it’s launching, we observed that the project is going on smoothly and nearing completion in 2017.The Sanniquellie water facility, built in the 60s, had been dormant since the war, leaving every facility nearly destroyed or damaged. The US government is replacing nearly everything damaged during the war and ensuing years, running a new pipeline as well as providing new designs for the water storage facilities. If completed, every part of Sanniquellie will have safe drinking water, providing significant protection against waterborne diseases.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
