Man Utd transfer flops

first_img The midfielder scored four goals in 32 appearances for the club, making him one of the biggest transfer flops in recent times. Here, Press Association Sport looks at five more players who flopped at United. Less than a year after signing from Real Madrid in a £59.7million deal, Angel di Maria has left Manchester United for Paris St Germain. :: Eric Djemba-Djemba (£3.5million) – July 2003 – January 2005 Appearances: 39, Goals: 2 Djemba-Djemba was supposed to be the man to succeed Roy Keane as United’s driving force in midfield, but two years after joining from Nantes, the Cameroonian was sold to Aston Villa, where he flopped again. He is now plying his trade with Indonesian club Persebaya Surabaya after spells in Scotland, Denmark, Qatar, Serbia, Israel and India. Juan Sebastian Veron (£28.1million) July 2001 – August 2003 Appearances: 82, Goals: 11 Sir Alex Ferguson bought Veron to add extra quality to his squad, but the Argentinian’s arrival meant United’s midfield quickly became unbalanced and he was sold to Chelsea at a loss of £13million after just two seasons at the club. :: Radamel Falcao (£6million) September 2014 – May 2015 Appearances: 29, Goals: 4 United fans thought they had pulled off one of the biggest coups of the transfer window last summer when they signed Falcao on loan from Monaco. The Colombian two-time Ballon d’Or nominee never held a first-team place down at United though and his only goals came against Everton, Stoke, Leicester and Aston Villa. It came as no surprise when United informed Monaco they would not be taking up the option of signing Falcao on a permanent basis for £43.2million, although Chelsea later took a punt on him. :: Massimo Taibi (£4.5million) – August 1999 – July 2000 Appearances: 4 United signed Taibi from Venezia following the retirement of Peter Schmeichel and injuries to Mark Bosnich and Raimond van der Gouw. He was quickly dubbed ‘The Blind Venetian’ after a costly gaffe against Southampton. Four months after signing for United, he left for Reggina :: Bebe (£7m) – August 2010 – July 2014 Appearances: 7, Goals: 1 After being abandoned by his parents at a young age, Bebe caught the eye of Vitória de Guimaraes, who signed him and then immediately sold him to United, who were worried they would lose the Portuguese to Real Madrid. Ferguson had not seen Bebe play before, so he therefore described the transfer as a “wee gamble”. It would turn out to be a woeful failure, and Bebe left for Benfica in 2014 having barely played for United. Press Associationlast_img read more
