Nova Scotia Energy Scholarship Winners Announced

first_imgTwenty university and community college students across Nova Scotia have been awarded scholarships for energy-related studies through the Pengrowth-Nova Scotia Energy Scholarship program. Eleven university students have been awarded $10,000 each over four years. Nine Nova Scotia Community College students have each received $2,500 one-year, non-renewable scholarships. The winners were announced today, Oct. 8, by Premier Rodney MacDonald and Pengrowth’s director of East Coast operations, Jim MacDonald, at the Canadian Offshore Resources Exhibition and conference in Halifax. “The 2008 scholarship recipients show great potential and demonstrate a clear interest in the Nova Scotia energy sector” said the Premier. “With promising energy developments underway, it is important that we support the innovators of tomorrow.” Next year, the program will expand, adding two $2,500 non-renewable trade scholarships for the aboriginal community. “Partnerships between the province and aboriginal communities across Nova Scotia are very important,” said Mi’kmaq Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy. “This support shows the province’s commitment to ensuring the future success of our youth. Scholarships are awarded to Nova Scotia high school graduates pursuing energy-related studies at a university or the Nova Scotia Community College. Recipients are chosen based on a combination of academic achievement and involvement in extra-curricular activities. “Through our ownership in the Sable Offshore Energy Project, Pengrowth has become deeply connected to the communities across Nova Scotia,” said Jim MacDonald. “We are proud to strengthen our partnership with the Nova Scotia government to cultivate the talent that will foster future energy developments.” The Pengrowth Nova Scotia Energy Scholarship program was established in 2005. Since its inception, 77 students have received funding. Pengrowth contributed $2 million to the program and $1 million was contributed by the province. The deadline for the 2009 undergraduate and trades scholarships is May 2009.
